As communities expand across the countryside, any leaks in existing underground piping systems can cause water, health, and safety problems to the communities, usually resulting in costly legal and abatement issues. This community has an underground fuel oil transmission line running through it.

In order to comply with new requirements for leak detection, a TraceTek fuel oil detection system is being installed alongside the single wall pipe. The sensor is pulled through slotted PVC conduit. If fuel were to leak, it would be drawn into the slotted conduit by capillary action, and then detected and located by the TraceTek sensor cable.

Because the sensors can be removed at any time, this installation is serviceable. In the event of leak detection, the cable can be pulled and verified prior to digging up pipe.
